Pensacola

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

This is where the road to Fort Pickens used to be at Pensacola National Seashore. It was washed out by hurricanes Ivan and Katrina. I’m off to Apalachicola tomorrow and then to Fort Desoto to check out the start of the Everglades Challange race.

This is Navarre Beach. It’s east of Pensacola, part of the same barrier island chain.

Today’s tour was the Mississippi River below Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This is a view toward the river levee from the Oak Alley Plantation House. These are 300 year old oak trees.

Louisiana Bound

I’m in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the night. I’ll tour some plantations and head for New Orleans tomorrow. The weather has turned nasty for the last couple of days. It’s supposed to clear up tomorrow.   Here’s my campsite on Padre Island, Texas from a couple of days ago.

South Padre Island

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

I’m on South Padre Island, Texas, on the Gulf. Lots of resorts and beaches. They had pelican warning lights on the causeway over here! I’ll be heading for the National Seashore on North Padre this morning. It’s so humid this morning that I had to put on my PFD to get to the showers.

Big Bend NP

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Big Bend National Park is in southern Texas, bordered on the bottom by the Rio Grande River. This is a view to the west from Chisos Basin through The Window.

I drove south along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive and put my toe in the Rio Grande river at Santa Elena Canyon. That’s Mexico over there.

Old US-80 – Arizona

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

I looped south on Old US-80 today through Tombstone and Bisbee, Arizona. They’re both historic western towns. I missed the shootout at the OK Corral.

Here’s a shot of Main Street in Bisbee.
